Viggen tire/wheel Qs Posted by Frank [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I've got 4 rims bent to various degrees after 14,000 miles on my '99 Viggen. I'm not sure I want to spend any money to repair or replace the stock wheels, because from my own experience and what I've heard from others at the Flight Academy and read here I think they aren't particularly sturdy wheels (btw, I think they're Moda R1s).
I'm thinking about Ronal, OZ, Borbet or ASA wheels, among others (although the Ronal gave me some sticker shock). Does anybody have any suggestions or experiences to share about replacement wheel manufacturers, sizes, etc.?
I've seen some posts here about tires, but I don't recall seeing anything about changing the 215/45-17 stock tire size. The guy at Ronal suggested increasing the tire size to 225/45-17. And Pirelli's site has a list of compatible plus sizes for Viggens including a 235/45-17 (overkill?). I think a little wider tire might look better and maybe even help in transmitting the power to the road a bit. Has anyone else tried this?
Finally, I'm thinking one of those SmarTire tire pressure monitoring systems might be a wise investment considering the cost of replacement rims and the lousy roads in the Philadelphia area where I live. Any feedback on how well those work?
Help with any of these questions would be appreciated!
