On the one hand, if I were really good about checking my tire pressure the sensors might not be necessary. But, I know I've been lax before and that probably contributed to my rim problems. And as you pointed out, you could check it one day and hit a nail the next day and you might not realize you've got a slow leak. I'm leaning towards doing it considering it's basically less than the price of a single tire and rim.
Plus, you've gotta admit it would be kinda cool to have "telemetry"!
