You've got all the important prerequisites: a budget, a car that is paid for and which you don't need to get you places, a garage and a realistic view on your skills/luck (that is - you're not going to freak out if things don't work out right all at once).
Sure- you could use the money to get a turbo saab - but considering the fact you will always lose out to some extent by swapping cars that $ 2K might get you a car that is worth only slightly more than yours, and of course comes with a lot of unknowns. Spending your money on the car you have right now wil ensure you know where your money went... :-)
Abbott Racing succesfully campaigned an NA 900 in the British Saloon Car Championship in the mid-Nineties, after the format of that series was changed from 'anything goes' (they won the championship in '92 and '94 with a 9000 CS 2.3T and an NG900T respectively) to strictly 2-litre unblown sedans. They would presumably be the first place to talk to for such a project.
Happy Saabing,
Eric
