Intake/MAS questions (pic)

I have a '97 2.3 NA 900S and have modified the intake by removing the stock box and fitting a section of 3" aluminum tubing (cut from an Integra intake system) from the mass airflow sensor to a cone filter. Tubing was attached to the car to aid against vibration issues. I've noticed more sound upon full throttle accelleration, but, honestly, cannot difinitively say that I've noticed any power change. My mechanic, however, says it's the most powerful non-turbo he's ever driven (he's been a Saab mechanic for many years).
I was wondering how I could go about extending this tubing beyond the mass airflow sensor.
1. Can the sensor housing be enlarged to 3" without affecting it's output(doubt it)
2. Any options for re-tuning this sensor, if it were to be enlarged and did affect sensor output?
3. Can the plastic "grill" located before the sensor be removed (or does this aid in smoothing the flow to the sensor?)
4. What material can I use to go from the throttle body to the back of the mass airflow sensor (easy to bend, etc).
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
