The stock turbos on Saabs are good turbos; that's why Saab picked them. Saab did NOT pick them for high performance applicability, though. They are not efficient much beyond the stock limitations. For example, the T3 that comes on most 900 turbos, is not very efficient beyond 16 psi. Stock is 11.7 psi, or thereabouts. Sure, the turbo is capable of boost all the way out to 30 psi, but that does not mean you are getting the true benefit of 16+ psi. Once you leave a turbo's efficiency range, you start getting intake temperature spikes that the stock IC can't overcome. That's why when you get into the super boost (20+ psi) most people get boost taper and/or boost spikes with peaks and valleys. The best fuel system can't ovecome that.

The seals on these stock turbos can't take the heat, either, literally. They break down, and end up passing oil into your engine where you don't want it, which is in your air intake, which sits in your IC as well.

Water injection is a recommended band-aid for this situation. It's not supposed to be a band aid, though! It is supposed to improve performance by lowering your intake temperature. It provides huge returns to those that use it, but mainly to those with stock turbos. Imagine the gains of water injection with the proper turbo! In this situation, the engine is not sensing knock because of the reduced intake temps, which allows for more boost. The turbo is still pumping out super hot air and killing the seals.

I just ordered my new turbo from them: A Mitsubishi TE05 with their Big 16G compressor wheel and their Texas Monster Thurst Bearing upgrade. Give 'em a call and ask for Tommy. Their turbos seem to cost only a little more than a stock rebuild.

Good luck,

Mike
