One might assume that you are talking about 10W30.
I urge to try a xxW40 oil. With a mature engine's clearances, you can expect to get smoother quieter running.
I went from Mobil One 10W30 to Mobil Delvac One (only avail as 5W40), and my mpg's !improved! by around 6%. So that is less friction and therefore less wear. Both oils are 'true' synthetic base stocks. No FakeTec(tm) group III oil in my engine.
So try it, if you don't see any advantage to the heavier oil, then you can do something else with the next oil change, so at worse you are not going to be out of pocket.
Some will point out that the W40 has to disipate more energy than a W30. This will be true for the viscous losses in the journal bearings, but for the cams and pistons where boundary lubrication, and the most wear occurs, there is more going on then visous losses! So the reduction of friction in these 'other' areas more than compensates for the viscous loss increases in the journal bearings and some other areas. This reduction of fuel consumption is known to occur with some 'true' synthetic oils, it is not just my opinion or observation. It just happens to be obvious with my 95SET. It is interesting that my gain is relative to Mobil One 10W30!
