...ask yourself this question: "Did this car overheat when they built it?".
I think most will agree that the answer is "no". So with all stock parts, if they're working correctly, the car should not overheat. The fact that it's running hot means something is *broken*, not that something needs to be modified.
One thing I wouldn't discount is that your gauge may be lying to you. Have you ever actually checked the cylinder head temp. with a thermometer? You may find it's not really running hot at all, and the temp sensor just needs to be replaced.
Another common cause of this is if you have a 2-speed radiator fan (I think most '89's do), the low speed may not be working. Thus, the engine has to heat up to the high-speed trip point before the fan comes on.
