Here is what Bentley has to say:
"Two versions of electronic ignition systems are used on cars covered by this manual [1981-1988], depending on model year. The terms inductive impulse and Hall-Effect refer to the electrical devices in the distributor. All models have centrifugal advance weights and a vacuum advance mechanism."
There is a section about testing the mechanical advance, which reads:
All Models - "To test the mechanical advance, remove the distributor cap and dust cover. Grasp the rotor and rotate the distributor shaft against spring tension (about 1/8 of a turn). Release the rotor and check that it snaps back without sticking or binding."
This information is very similar to my factory 99 service manual which covers 1975 to 1980.
That all said, I think that only the inductive impulse systems have a mechanical/centrifugal advance. The Hall-Effect system does away with the need for it, or that's my understanding.
