If you are prepared to drain the oil for often for a while, that would be better. This will remove the large amount of wear metals that will be released in a green engine. These are mostly too small for a full flow oil filter to remove. These particles are not good for the aluminum piston skirts and the rings lands. The solf journal bearings are also damaged by these small ferrous particles that the filter cannot capture, as these are the around the same thickness of the oil films. Getting these embedded in the seal lips of oil seals is not good either. So the best thing is a few early drains, as nothing else short of a bypass filter will remove these wear particles from the engine. Drain after driving to have these particles stirred and suspended in the oil. So if you are prepared to drain 'often' for a while, a good quality dyno oil would make sense from a cost point of view. However, a thicker oil will prevent some scuffing wear. Are these new bearings in the engine?
I do not see any point in changing the full flow filter during these frequent drains, except to remove the oil from the system contained in the oil. I would set the filter inverted and let it drain then put it back. Sticking something to hold the anit drain valve rubber open will help.
Rotella 15W40 dyno diesel would work well if you don't have any cold starting concerns where you are. It is very afordable,at WallyWorld, and has a very good anti wear addative package. Many will offer that a 10W30 will be better for the running clearances of a 'new' engine. There is much to debate about that. Some better synthetic 5W40 or 0W40's will provide better lubrication than some very good 10W30's. With what I know today, I would break-in an engine differently than my 95 SET was done. And would experiment with the synthetic xW40 oils right a way. You may find that you can get a smoother quieter engine with these and better mpg's at the same time. There is no danger. Just see for your self and trust your senses.
