Are these MAF'S hot wire or hot film?

So what burns off without leaving a deposit. I don't know if you can count on anything burning off. These temps would also oxidize the elements.

Don't over oil the K&N. Easier said than done, as they don't wash up snow white. So getting an even color does not work.

An off spec MAF will not change mixtures, and the ECU and O2 senor will adapt for that to some extent. For diesels an off spec MAF can reduce power, as diesels are lean burn and don't have O2 sensors. So they cannot compensate for such things. The diesel folks find that cleaning a contaminated MAF can increase power. One has to be very carefull with the choice of cleaning solvent. And the hot wire/film element must not be touched with anything mechanical! A plastic safe electronic wash must be used. A solvent for tuners and switches might have a lubricant or silicones which would be very bad. MAF's are very expensive, so take lots of caution and for the most part leave things well enough alone.

There is a lot of urban myth about oiled filters contaminating MAF's. There is no absolute answer, but some dealers and auto manufacturers take a hard defensive line, especially when they get a lot of MAF failures, however most of those failures are on vehicles with no modifications of any kind. Some MAF designs have been very unreliable.

There are some engines where the crankcase vent gets ductend rather close downstream of the MAF, and some feel that at engine shutdown that vapors can get to the MAF. One can check for oil deposts in the duct upstream and down stream of the MAF. If there is more of an oil contamination of the duct surfaces immediatly below the MAF, then that is an interesting observation. If the distance from the MAF to the crankcase gas entry point is large enough, contamination is very unlikely. There ar some BB's where folks go nuts debating such things.

Some air pollution will go thru any air filter and that can create MAF deposits, but, for the most part, such will not be significant.

I think that a MAF can allow for tighter engine management and better fuel efficiencies, but from a reliabilty point of view, I am glad to have a T5 speed-density setup. MAF's have a habit of dying like a DI with 100000 miles. But the time of death can be much earlier and random.
