Maybe some of you know, maybe not, but I have been struggling with performance problems since I bought my car. I am taking it in to the local saab healer tomorrow morning to have a look-see.
The Problem: When ambient temp is low (<25F) the car is a ROCKET. Well, by comparison anyway, 3rd gear peelout on boost onset is fast enough, for now! When it gets much warmer than that, no more fast car. Details: Boost levels are fairly consistent during temp variances, pushing 18-19psi cold, 15-16 warm. Not much APC activity other than the self-tuning created kickback when it hits 19 or so. The power just "goes away," when ambient temps are up, when engine has heat soaked from racing around a lot or idling for a while. Fastest on long, cold stretches of highway. Also, the car *seems* faster at 2/3 throttle than full. New tps last week btw. A.M. A/F gauge always 2 bars rich at wot, fwiw. The power loss almost feels as though the timing is somehow excessively retarded as temps climb: just goes soft, loses the big torque spike on spoolup, feels like max torque is around 4000rpm rather than the factory ~3000. I know the timing is not changing with temp- just trying to explain how it feels from the drivers seat. Almost feels like a boost leak, but no noises to indicate that, except a strange fluttering sound before the car is up to operating temp. I would elaborate more but I try not to boost under these conditions. It sounds to originate under hood, near dash, on left side of car. Very audible with windows up. Goes away almost immediately after 1 or 2 sec of sustained boost, not to appear again until cold restart. I have never seen anyone with temp dependant intake integrity problems- that sort of thing would show up here!
OK, here's the lowdown:
1991 900TSPG 168K
EGR removed
I/C Fan
New intake man. grommets
K&N Hot Air Intake
Magnecor Wires
New 7ES Plugs, gapped at .65mm
New Cap & Rotor
Brad's Modified AID (extra retard)
Timing set at 19 deg btdc
3.0bar FPR
Self tuned APC (F cranked all the way in, P set to avoid runaway boost climb) max PSI: 20ish
Sillycone Vac Lines
Recently cleaned BPC solenoid
2.5in Hi-Flow-Cat Back Exhaust
Aquamist 1s (removed for now until I get this figured out, don't really feel much benefit from it this time of year anyway)
Suspicious: This is a non-Cali car, the ECU was replaced under warranty in the early nineties. Records do not say why. I can state P/N if anyone thinks it will help.
Soooo... Is there anything specific the shop should look at to help track the problem? They will tighten all the exh/turbo plumbing, and test with an unmolested APC and 2.5bar FPR to begin with. I have personally never seen/heard of anything like this on these cars- at least not this drastic. Any suggestions will be gratefully honored, this board has helped a great deal in the past. Thank you all very much!
