The ZF torque converter has 2.3 to 1 torque multiplication at a specific input to output speed ratio. This means 200 lb ft into the converter is 460 lb ft out, increase input to 300 lb ft = some serious torque.
All transmissions have a design life, based on calculations and experience of the transmission builder. Big factors in the design life are fatigue and deflection of the mechanical components. High stresses reduce the fatigue life considerably and excessive deflection can place undue stress on components. A design is based on the majority of transmissions exceeding a specified milage of normal or expected use, like 100K miles with a stock engine. As a result there are reserves built into a tranny that allow higher loads without instant failure. The enemy of clutch material is heat, under normal operation they wear very little. Slipping a clutch under high load increases the temperature of the clutch lining very rapidly. Most clutch linings are a paper composition (that's right paper) which can not adsorb, transfer or withstand large amounts of heat.
The ZF transmission has boost pressure compensation, it would be nice to know at what boost level this funtion ceases to compensate for boost pressure. Dr. Boost may know the answer to that or a test is in order.
