My feeling is that unless the airflow path is already as short & clean as possible, you'll see minimal gain from insulating the intake pipes. For example, I think having 3 feet of uninsulated path is more beneficial than having 5 or 6 feet of insulated airway. I think that, theoretically, you will get an improvement from any insulation of the air path, but I don't know if you'll actually notice a difference. As far as cost-per-benefit goes, if you've already got the insulation & the time, it wouldn't hurt.
