The aluminum bits will be straight forward. The lower fastener might not be, I believe that it is a stud, and a thick aluminum part leaves the stud too short, so you might need a nut with a round reach-in shank, another custom part.

Yes, just replacing the rubber with anthing would work well. Perhaps something cut from maple hardwood. That might get you 80% of the benefits. For the brace, some thinwall steel tubining, pounded flat and bent the ends might work quite well for the tower brace. With these costs, do at both ends and result will be better that VRK unit. You will want some crush built into the wood parts. Perhaps a thin layer of something between the wood and metal parts could be applied, perhaps some thing self vulcanizing rubber tape. You will have to do some trial fitting and see what feels right. The added thin rubber tape might have the benefit of a very strong grip! Got router? Make template?
