On my 95SET, I insulated the intake plumbing and found that I did not get severe drop in power that occurs when temperatures get into the 80's and 90's.
So as well as improving the performance of the intercooling, it can help to reduce the heat that gets into the air after the intercooler.
For the NG900's with the original intercooler, upgrading the intercooler to the Viggen unit has a great benefit in the reducing the pressure drop across the IC, as well as reducing the temperature. I still have the original IC.
If the IC reduces the temperature enough to eliminate knock conditions, then I would assume that the water injection would have a less significant contribution to power. Perhaps Brad has some experience to share on this point. But at 20PSI, perhaps one needs all and any anti detonant mods.
When water injection is used, the intake air thermistor needs to know about it, or it will still be mapping for hot air. The water injection needs to be up stream of the thermistor.
On the NG900, and probably on many other models, the intake manifold is made of aluminum, and bolts up to the aluminum head with a thin gasket. The intake manifold does pick up a lot of heat from the head which then heats the intake air. There was a thread last fall concerning phenolic intake manifold gaskets. This would be very helpful, but these are not commercially available for the Saabs.
The NG900 and other models(?) have a coolant loop in the throttle body, to keep the vacuum ports from freezing up. This loop could be fitted with a valve to turn off this heat source during warm or hot weather.
95SET, 120000 miles, external boost controller, Viggen rescue kit, intake mods.
