new turbo and engine

...wanted to get some thoughts from those who have modified engines. My car is an '87TC w/ tweaked APC, sport exhaust, K&N, lightened flywheel w/ 9000 clutch and a few other doodads...in the last month my turbo sucked a part through my engine so I had a new engine (used) and turbo (Garret reman) installed...Before the replaced engine, my boost gauge hung around 10-11 o'clock at idle and boosted into middle red for a second or two, then dropped to between orange and red for rest of rpm range...it was fast, but the power came in a burst, but quickly peetered out...Now, my boost gauge hangs at 9 o'clock, way on the left, and boost, when floored, goes off the gauge past the red (gulp) initially, then settles into mid to high red for the rest of the rpm range...the car feels very fast, especially in 4th gear where it goes from 50 to 80 in a very short time...couple of questions:
1. with all new vacuum lines, and reman turbo, is that why the gauge is way on the left at idle?
2. am I flirting w/ fate by having that much boost (actually off the red)?
3. when floored in 3rd gear, at high boost, I hear a noise that is more mechanical/metallic that sort of scares me...any ideas?
I'm going to talk to the tech about these things this week, and wanted some input from some of you...thanks...
Taylor, you were at the shop when some of the work was being done...any thoughts?
