I know what you mean about tightening the pinion bearing bolt, BF wrench and a 4 foot bar with me hanging on the end. I used a 10lb bag of sugar as a weight and about 3 feet of string. Need is the mother of invention.

I used some normal reassembly lube - similar to tan colored bearing grease - when I built my trans and made sure everything was generously smeared. The roller bearings on the secondary shaft NEED pregreasing as oil will take a while to get pumped down the shaft.

I found that Erikkson http://www.erikssonindustries.com was the best source for parts, especially the odd ball bits, but they are a bit pricey and will want to know exactly what shim thickness you need etc. If you are replacing the input bearings (right behind the lower chain pulley) as well then this is a bit impractical since the bearing is set using a press, and trial and error, not some finite measurement. I tried to get a "kit" out of them, but ended up with 3 of the same thickness shims each with different part #s. Finally I ordered some shim stock from a local steel dealer and got a shop that does laser cutting (for signs and logos) cut a couple of shims for me. (The guy said it was the oddest request he had had yet, but the Autocad file was a 3 minute job to draw up.)

I used Castrol Synthetic 10w40 initially, then changed it for VWs synth trans oil. No signs of distress so far.
