I'm guessing they use the shorter stroke so they can rev the crap out of the motor. Then crank up the boost, ignition and fuel knowning the motor only has to last a very short period of time.
I agree that the walls would probably be paper thin after that much boring, but it is a way to increase power with the same level of boost. I wish I had the time and money to give it a shot, then again I say that about a lot of ideas.
