... Per's 2.0 engine could be made to breathe in the same charge that a larger engine would. By increasing the charge pressure and reducing the compression ratio, the turbocharged 2.0 can be made to emulate a turbocharged 2.3 engine as far as maximum torque goes.
What you lose is flexibility at part-load, where the low compression ratio makes for a less-efficient engine. I don't imagine this is much of a problem for the sort of driving that car is intended for. This is the limitation that would adversely affect a road-going car and that Saab is developing the variable-compression engine to overcome (I believe they were producing 225hp from a 1.6 litre engine).
As AdamB points out, if you can produce the same torque as a large engine in an engine with shorter stroke, then you can turn the engine faster and get more power from that torque. I would think that there would be less flexing of the block and crankshaft with a shorter stroke for the same torque output.
