Well I guess the wait finally paid off. Last week I had received most of all the goodies I had ordered throught Dave, out at Lesco. Those included the RRFPR (with pressure gauge for fuel rail), 18 psi Wastegate actuator, and the A.I.D unit. Also that same week I received my Aquamist 1S water injection system, the 2.3L head with cams(from 93' Aero), the Autometer Blk on Blk A/F gauge, clear corner lenses from Engstrom.net and lastly the poly trans mount from eeuroparts.com. I had to wait til the weekend to finally start installing these new found toys for my 88' 9000T Airflow. Saturday moring I got up early and headed for the base hobby shop where I do all my work. There I'd use the lift for the mount and wastegate. The poly trans mount was VERY simply to do, with help from a friend we were done in about 1.5 hrs. The Wastegate that Dave had sent me was a very nice piece of work and althought the new unit went it fairly easily, getting the only one out took the better part of 2 hrs if not more, what a pain it was.....So for the 4 hrs I spent working on the car that day I just had to see what difference it made. The ploy trans mount is GREAT and a must as all kinds of noises I was having, and the terrible shifting feeling when going through the gears had all but went away. The car felt NEW again. The new wastegate made a big difference as well in how the boost felt as it climbed. It just seem to take less effort or was less of a strain on the engine for it to reach 15 psi, and it was not loosing pressure at all. It climbed with the greatest of ease. Again, great upgrade...
The following day I installed the RRFPR, Fuel Gauge and the A.I.D unit in my driveway. What I thought would take 2 hrs took less than 1 hr for all three of them combined. Dave even included the pressure relief valve with custom bracket for the A.I.D unit. The bracket he made for the RRFPR was also very nicely made as well and powder coated too. What great looking, custom built, one off pieces these things looked like. Right away when I drove the car, I though WOW! I mean I could always reach 20 psi but it seemed like I really had to push it to get it up there you know, now it just goes and again, it's alot smother during the process. I'll note that before I'd use to get a CEL during periods of high boost (anything over say 18 psi) but that has went away. Not sure why but it's gone and the boost is ROCK SOLID.
I had Monday off, so I just kept at it. Next up was the Autometer gauge and prep work for the Aquamist. The A/F gauge was againe fairly easy along with the wiring for the Aquamist because I had read so much about them on this BB during the weeks before the install. 1 hr for the gauge and another 2 for the Aquamist system and it was almost complete. Just needed to tap for the jet(0.7) on the intake and hook up the power wire to the battery.
After it was installed I took a short light footed drive, at first I didn't feel anything but when I drove it the next day I could tell the difference right away when it kicked on. Not like the boost wasn't already great after the the other stuff but now it's just crazy... hit 22 PSI and it wanted to still climb further.
Some of the readings I'm seeing and things I still need to accomplish to dial it all in:
fuel pressure gauge reads 36-37 psi with hose disconnected, or about 2.5 bar, so that looks good.
A/F gauge reads about 4 bars (green) rich with heavy throttle. Perhaps the RRFPR needs turned down a bit, not sure?
Base boost needs resetting as it read about 7 psi or slighty more with wires disconnected, also explains why max boost is so high. Gonna set that back down to 5.5 psi tomorrow.
Not exactly sure where the timing is since it's not been check for a while, will set that to 19-20 degrees tomorrow as well. As off boost performance is still kinda lacking.
So: gotta set timimg , reset base boost.
The cylinder head is gonna be sent to Dave so he can do things to it that SAAB didn't care to. Also looking into upgraded cams. Can't wait to see how that turns out in a few weeks/months
All in all it was a fun time fooling around with the car. It builds boost so fast that you gotta watch your foots pressure on the throttle. I'm very, very please with the things Dave sent me, I can't say that enough and he's taken the time to always answer my questions as needed by phone.
Once everythings dailed in I'm sure it's gonna be fun.. more reports to come, thanks for listening.
