They are one of those strange comparisons, that are very similar in some ways and totally incomparable in others...
I would have to suspect that the long-term integrity of the SAAB would be better. Parts for the Merkur can vary from typical American to scary European. There is a conversion kit for rear disc brakes. There used to be acompany that specialized in XR4Ti tuning, I think it was called something like 'Rapido'. XR4's seem to be cheaper to buy, though probably even more difficult to find in good condition. The engine is a crude Pinto lump, but it is almost indestructible. The turbo is a small Garrett - adding an intercooler and bigger turbo must help a lot. I would think that with decent suspension work, handling would improve immensely. Not a lot of Cosworth parts are interchangeable, unfortunately. I think in good condition the car looks really imposing, especially with the right color, though it's probably easier to get 250 hp from an SPG. Mind you, as a precursor to the Sierra Cosworth, Eggenberger ran works-supported Merkurs in the 1986 European Touring Car championship... Steve Soper put one on pole at Brno (the old street circuit), after hitting 178 mph on the straight!
