In Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, (Canada) temps go to -40 C or F, as the 2 scales meet there. When plugged in I never had a lick of trouble. Heat also came on early because engine was not struggling to come up above zero. The draw back is AC electricity consumption and monthly bill (about 20-30 per month unless you turn on car only when you need to). My cold weather fix is a battery trickle charger, a block heater, an electrical battery blanket, and an AC electrical interior heater that go on 1-2 hours before you drive in the morning and 1-2 hours before you go home at night.
I know you are talking of other things here, but cold temps can kill engines while they also goop up the oil. Gooped oil don't protect so well. I said to Heck to my engine seals and used Mobil 1 all winter due to its anti-gooping (low viscosity maintanence) features down to -35F. Even at minus 37F one day where I forgot to plug in, I started her up without a problem.
Friends who used other oils were dead meat that night as we left this party as their batteries were screwed by the cold cranking amps phenomena and the gooped oil making the alternators need more amps which were already buggered.
