if your car has a brain (like any modern F.I. system) it will want to keep stoichiometric ratio near the optimum, which is approx 14.something to 1 , or you may want a tad more at high rpm or WFO because mixtures tend to lean out. without the brain (which is the 02 sensor and ICU) your engine is at happenstance.
anyway, the only reason a car might run "better" WFO without a sensor would be because everything just happened to line up properly, i.e. atmospheric pressure, temperature, sunspots, etc. think of just bolting a carburetor up and just guessing at jetting, etc. you might run better. you might *not*
In my experience, all of my cars ran better throughout rev range w/new 02 compared to old decayed 02.
