You could easily get a start with a piston ring compressor, piston ring expander/installation tool, glaze break/hone, torque wrench, valve spring compressor, feeler gauge, and magnetic pickup (for valve collets). It may be a good idea to leave valvetrain work and engine blueprinting to a competent area machine shop but most engine bearing clearances can be checked with a plastigauge as found at any NAPA or local parts supplier.
Make certain that any piston ring set includes a Chromium top ring and engine bearings should be tri-metal.
Because of the high Nickel in the SAAB 2.0 liter engine block castings, most engine rebuilds will not require a bore oversize/machine. OEM Forged crankshaft and connecting rods make for reliable performance components but many enthusiasts opt for forged pistons to replace the factory cast versions.
Good luck and regards,
GSK @ SWEDISH DYNAMICS, INC.
