I have turned mine down so that averaging is about 13-14 psi, cold weather peaking maybe around 15, whereas before it was 20-22 psi.
I just bought a house so now my car needs to last forever on minimal maintenance. :)
Regarding your '87 9kT, you might want to check the base boost. I couldn't get mine above 16 psi to save it's life, until base boost was upped. It was considerably lower than stock, by about 1 psi, and I had it upped to 6 psi (stock is 5.35 psi if I remember correctly). Now I just turn the F pot most all the way up (400 ohms - goes to about 450) and adjust max boost with P. Currently it's at 10k ohms I think, just picked a nice round figure.
Advancing the timing does wonders for the lower end response and makes the car feel a lot faster even if you don't up the boost.
