I have some data on itercoolers.
On a classic 900 with stock intercooler, fan mounted on intercooler. Temp at turbo discharge was 300F and intercooler discharge was 200F. This was with stock turbo that was bein overspeed.
I resently made a front mount intercooler for my 1991. Ths is not adapted from another car but mades specific to work with the a/c. Turbo discharge was 250F intercooler discharge was 116F This car has a more properly sized turbo. This intercooler flows about 489 CFM. There is no lag in my setup. I used 2" tube and designed the intercooler to have as minimal of interior volume as posible. I have now way to quantify the lack of lag but all that have driven it are suprised at the trhottle responce.
If you would like a picture of my design you can e-mail me a brad@kcsaab.com and I will send a picture.
