Years ago, I was pleased with my 1980 Turbo suspension set-up, which was done on a college-budget.
First, make sure any suspension components aren't worn out before investing in performance stuff - tie-rod ends, ball joints, wheel bearings, etc. Actually, make sure ths car in general is worth the expense of modifications. Just getting new bilsteins in a a base 900 with 86K will make a big difference, and you're replacing something that is close to worn out anyway. Moderation is good IMHO.
My mechanic was a big fan of the soft spring, stiff shock set up, so with his advice I replaced the stock springs with ones from a later-model turbo and installed brand-new bilstein shocks. I wouldn't recommend lowering your car too much. Later mods were hi-performance bushings for the A-arms.
