....from an old geezer! I've always had at least one Saab, starting with my first '71 99, which I bought with a blown transaxle/freewheel and transplanted a 'real' Saab engine/transaxle - a '74 2 liter - into it. I've owned several 900's, too. Luckily, even though I had bad experiences with Saab transaxles in the 900, I stayed with the marque and bought a used
'87 9000. I was intrigued with the practicality of a family sedan that wasn't much bigger, externally, than the 900, yet still had the mechanic-friendly design and engineering. I didn't modify that '87 (with 165 hp, it was much more powerful than any Saab turbo I previously owned) but my next Saab, a '92 9000 that I transplanted a '94 engine/transaxle into, got me thinking of performance, again. You see, you shouldn't be discouraged from adding performance - you just have to have a good foundation to build upon. The B234 is such a foundation. It is capable of plenty of horsepower with only minor modifications due to the T5 - an engine management system that was light-years ahead of its' time, relative to other vehicles. Think about it - what other engine management system uses the spark plugs for combustion data input to the computer - it's brilliant and I can't understand why other marques have not emulated it. And the transaxle, although not as strong as the 6 speed in a C5 'vette, is certainly robust enough to take more than 225 hp (mine is probably over 300). Anyway, the point is don't get discouraged with performance and Saabs. 9000's can still be had very reasonably. Parts are available for modifying. And unlike the 900, reliability remains intact - mines been modified for over 40k miles now, and I've never had an engine or transmission problem. There's also the sleeper aspect to consider: no one ever expects a family sedan to blow away M3's, S4's, etc., etc. - there's a lot to be said for driving a comfortable, luxurious vehicle, that was built for probably less than a quarter of what a new S4 goes for.
