Garry, GT is just a certain series of turbochargers. It has nothing to do with which kind of bearing you use. You can have GT40 with plain bearing or with ball bearing.

For some reason, people believe that all GT-series turbos are equipped with ball-bearings, which is not the case. If you read my message more carefully, you will see that i stated that ball-bearing equipped turbochargers will last shorter time than those equipped with plain bearings, but will have better spool-up characteristics. Reason for this is that ball-bearing have constant mechanical contact with bearing-races and subsequently wear down. Shaft using plain bearing doesn't touch outer race at all but spins on thin oil layer so there is no wear except when starting the engine when oil-pressure isn't present or if oil gets burned on it.
