if you don't drive in snow, then i would get Falken Azenis in a 205/50-15. they have been tested by Grassroots Motorsports magazine and found to be as grippy as BF Goodrich's and others' stickiest tires but cost ~$65 each rather than the BFG's ~$160 or Michelin's $200. Azenis won't last long but they are so cheap that who cares. also note that the sidewall is VERY stiff; ignore any responses here that claim a 205 won't work on a 5.5" rim (i autocross on this set-up and they are just fine). also note that the Azenis is sold as a racing tire (for rain) in other markets but as a street tire here in the States. the vast majority of autocrossers who race in street tire classes are on Azenis.
another good choice is the new-ish Kumho MX, which performs about as well as the Azenis but is not quite as stiff in the sides; about $90 each. IIRC, they come in a 205/55-15, which will preserve speedo accuracy (205/50 is ~5% fast).
also good but not nearly as grippy are the new-ish Yokohama ES100s. not the same performance as the above tires, but value-priced and adequate grip.
a notch or two below the Yoks are the Kumho 712 Ecstas. these are long-wearing tires and are cheap - ~$75 each. However, their longevity comes at the expense of grip - harder compound makes for less stick.
if you really want to spend the money, you can get Toyos, BFGs, etc. but the Azenis and MX are, performance-wise, truly on par with anything else on the market.
