APC Upgrade Question

I recently purchased an 88 SPG and am thinking of Upgrading the APC for more HP, better performance, etc. I have a few questions.
I have been all over the net and found many places that sell mods, SPG9, Sweedish performance, etc. Both have been more than helpful in answering my questions. I have also found a bunch of sites with do it yourself mods, etc.
My question to all of you is that when you buy a modified APC unit, it seems the unit itself was not designed for the car. For example, I saw a site for a gentlemen who had an 87 900 SPG. He woulh have had an APC unit 7524127 with a base hp of 165. He bought an SPG9 upgrade APC unit.
The unit he received was an APC unit 7524150 from a SAAB 9000. If this unit wasn't tweaked wouldn't it still increase the HP or would it work at all?
I guess what I'm asking is will any APC from any car work in any car? For example the APC model 4393971 already had 185 BHP, so would just swapping the APC make my SPG have 185 BHP, and if not why?
Thanks for all your help.
Roger
