I have written about this subject earlier. One can add these materials and bump up the octane and evaluate the difference it makes.

91 octane is typical in Kansas, Amoco has 92

I find that adding 1/2 gallon (2.7%) of 50:50 toluene to tank (18 US gallons) is a big improvement. The engine runs better and you don't get any boggs on acceleration or increased in power comming off of full throttle on boost. So those T7 artifacts seem to be from a lack of octane and I see that with 92 octane. Adding as above should produce around a tank of 93 octane and things run better. MPGs appear to be better on the highway too.

One gallon in a tank seems to be a bit sluggish, expensive as well.

So whenever you have suspicions that a problem might be octane related, then bumping the octane may very well confirm your suspicions.

So 92 octane may not be optimal for these engines.
