I don't agree with you. It is possible to modify the response of the APC without completely cutting it out of the circuit. I have experienced it and I've read many posts by Dean advocating the use of an SMBC for just such a purpose.
Although an SMBC can be used for more boost, the correct way to adjust one is to achieve boost more quickly. A properly set SMBC whether or not it is a Dawes Device or some other form of pressure regulator, which I use, does not allow any signal to the wastegate but only to its set point (7-8 psi or so). After this point the AP is fully functional and is quite capable of cutting back boost when one uses lesser octane fuel. Conversely, adding even higher octane fuel (adding octane booster, etc.) still results in a higher level of boost.
In my case I use the SMBC in conjunction with one additional restriction which has the effect of recalibrating the APC a bit so it allows a little more boost (probably about 3+ lbs on the average). I still get boost taper but I'm OK with that because my goal is better response in driving, not huge amounts of top end HP.
