Your friend's car is not a controlled example. Quick perusal of turbobricks.com shows other anecdotal experiences that reflect just the opposite -- a *loss* of power after installing a full 3-inch system. But that's beside the point.
62mm could be "just as good" as a 3-inch system because the 62mm size is sufficiently large to flow the exhaust without affecting velocity. It doesn't make sense to me to use a system whose materials are more costly, fitment more problematic, and benefits either unproven/non-existent. Put another way, why spec a 10-inch sewer pipe to convey 300 gallons of sh!t when a 6-inch pipe will do the job just as well, require less digging to bury, and cost less money?
My very humble opinion is that "the books," while not perfect (after all, anyone can publish a book), are nearly always vastly superior to the information found on the internet (my info included). As but one example, Corky Bell has made a successful career out of turbocharging cars by applying accepted engineering principles to his designs. Though I don't consider him to be all-knowing, it stands to reason that his experience and formulas are sound. He'd be out of business otherwise.
Nearly all of us who are interested in this game are somewhat hamstrung by the fact that we are rank amateurs with limited knowledge. What do you know about thermodynamics? Aerodynamics? Fluid dynamics? Combustion engine theory? Yeah, I don't know much, either.
It's easy to look for info on the web for advice; it's harder to determine if it's sound. As such, I keep my library card close at hand when I really want to know what's what and why that's so.
As above, IMVHO...
