You dont want a huge intercooler for a street car.
A race car has different criteria.
The larger the area that has to be pressurized the longer and harder the turbo has to work to reach your desired boost pressure.
The best thing you can do for responsiveness would be to run a pipe straight from the outlet of the turbo into the throttle body (high intake tempretures aside).
Why do you think Subaru and Say the 2nd gen RX7 turbo's wear their intercoolers right over the engine?
Its to reduce pumping losses incurred with a large intercooler and entended lengths of piping. For a responsive mild boosting(8-12 psi) setup this is ideal as it provides quick response and adequate cooling efficiency.
A large intercooler is great for keeping the intake tempretures down for long high boost runs(think open track racing) but you will incur a penalty in boost response.
For quick blasts down a 1/4 mile one can get away with a pretty small intercooler as by the time it starts loosing its efficiency and getting heat soaked you are already done with your run.
