I would still think there is a benefit as the Hirsch Saab Aero 305 has them mounted and I think they would only move to 18's if there was a benefit. They do also note that the wheels are designed to hold up better in lieu of potholes and such. The key is to have the correct tire fitted with the correct load rating and rolling diameter.
I have decided to put 18" Milli's on my 2004 Aero after doing some looking around. Originally I was going to stay with 17's, but after looking at allot of other cars and how much side wall they have I have decided to move up. My wife has a IS300 with 17's, but her sidewall's are half the size of mine with 17's and she has not had any problems. I do have some friends that moved to 18's and have had some bent rims, but after looking deeper into it they bought cheap cheap type's.
