You can use synthetic in the engine, I had a 9000T I bought at 60,000, soon after i was boosting 18-20psi with the help of water injection, the car was still running at 330,000, then the body failed from rust. The car ran a 5.9sec 0-60 a day before i took it off the road, and I also schooled the 135 mph speedo, I ran 147, tach convert speed. I now own an '86 900t and run castrol syntec, 5w-50. I would not use synthetic in the tranny however, my 900T, tranny was acting up till i swiched to regular 10w-40. My father who was a saab mechanic for 20+ years gave me the hint on the tranny oil.
