I have made a couple of front mount intercoolers for classic 900's. 489 to 503cfm. They fit between the grill and a/c condenser. The temperature drop is very good on the road 279F turbo discharge 116F intercooler discharge.
On last dyno run 277F turbo discharge and 66F intercooler discharge, this was with the grill out and a very strong fan blowing at the intercooler.
With a better flowing intercooler you will need more fuel.
When the front mount was installed the air fuel ratio went from 12.5 to 14.0.
It takes about 1.7CFM per horsepower.
A small intercooler can still make power it is just evey thing has to woek harder. The best dyno number I have with a stock TE05 and stock intercooler is 217hp at the wheel.
