PAECO Engine Update...HoHum Posted by Shaun [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Spent last weekend putting components on the engine and dropped it in Sunday a.m. Took Tuesday off and finished install and fired it up. At first, it was weeping coolant from headgasket on intake side of head...added some copper sealant in the coolant and that stopped.
Then, it started weeping oil out of the #1 & #2 exhaust ports....what the F.....so I left it and returned to the shop yesterday to fool around with it. Pulled the valve cover gasket and plugs. Cleaned the plugs and checked the valve timing, which looked good.
Retorqued the heads (ARP head studs via SPG9). Backed out each headbolt (one at a time) and retorqued per factory specs (Bentley). That 90 degree final turn bugged me. So I went through the two stages and upped the torque setting a little on each bolt, in sequence. The 90 degree turn equates to 110 ft. lbs. +/-.
Restarted the engine, and damn if it didn't continue to leak oil out those two ports.
So, I have a question: Where do ya'll think the oil is coming from??? The block was O-ringed for the copper headgasket and a copper sealeant was used per Swedish Dynamics recommendation.
Valve guides?? New oil rings were installed (the correct size this time) and the pistons were Swain coated. With Swain coating, the side wall cleanance is tightened up a touch, which supposedly reduces oil blow by etc.
What about the gasket? It does appear that the main oil return for the valves is at the front and rear of the engine, which goes right by the headgasket.
Trust me, I am so F'n disgusted with PAECO that there is no way I will return any component to them, let alone pull this engine for a third time.
Sorry to bother any of you with this situation, but I do appreciate any possible input. It will probably come down to me simply driving the car to a Saab shop and say "fix it."
