SDS has an advantage of an on-board monitor and display unit whereas most other stand alone systems offer a computer mapping capability. This option is nice but requires connection to a laptop or PC for mapping. Mapping would provide more of a "picture" as to fuel and ignition curve parameters and could make for an easier tailoring. As long as the system purchased has the ability to respond to detonation(and is adjusted properly), there will be minimal potential for engine damage. Look for a system that allows a direct link to knock sensor and will be the most simplistic set-up. Another factor relative to a daily driven vehicle will be the engine management's ability to employ an idle control valve (aic) which will help maintain idle quality under various conditions(loads from accessories such as AC, power steering, etc.).
Ideally, set-up and tailoring could be accomplished using a dyno but should not be mandatory. Comparing information from other users who have had success with a certain system will allow you to set-up base curve parameters. Fine tuning may be best forwarded to a local shop with dyno.
Consider doing some research before any purchase and make certain that you have positive information relative to the manufacturer's support and customer service which may come in handy when troubleshooting such systems.
Best of luck!
