Hi

I start a new tread, it was a lot of post in the other thread.
I saw that some peoples wanted our opinion about the broken pistons

I will try to clear some tings up

This is a pretty big problem for both Saab and Saab tuners that have warranty on there tuning.

The tings that happens is that the pistons on the 9-5 aero/viggen engines from 99-01 brakes.

It starts with a small crack as on the pictures.
It only to change the pistons if you stop the engine directly when you find out that your engine is not good.
You will notice that the car is not running as lean as normal and smoke puffs is coming up from the oil filling stick.

Some people keep going with the broken pistons and when the piston splits in two, then is the whole engine broken.

This is also happened with original engines.
Of course is it a bigger risk when you have increased the power in the engine.

We have tun about 3000:- Saab´s with T7 engines, and its only a few aero and viggen engines that have broken.
The strange thing is that we have tun a lot of 2,3t engines to almost the same power and never had a failure?

We have also only had one broken 02-04 engine, and that was a concept car.

Saab has one idea´that the DI box/cassette sends a spark when the piston is on the way up?

Its maybe therefore Saab has the new software for DI warning?

The pistons in the 9-5 is not good, the pistons in the 900/9000/9-3 -01 is much better.

The piston in the T7 engine can handle up to about 300hp, after that is it a big risk for damage.

I can fix a some more pictures on broken T7 pistons if someone is interested.

Best Regards Sasse
