I have a Viggen, a lowered and stiffened 88 900T, and a 91se convertible (SPG like).
The regular 9-3 doesn't have the same sort of attraction and soul of a Viggen. Now is probably the time to pick up a used one-owner viggen if you want one for the long haul to cherish and preserve. It's an enthusiast's vehicle so it's not meant as competition for accords and such, it's simply the finest and fastest original style 9-3 going.
The Viggen and 9-3 are different than the classic 900 and SPGs. It's been debated numerous times on there why. Saab would go broke making C900's so there is a lot put into them that they can't do in new cars these days. Quality of carpets, leathers, etc..
I plan to keep my classic 900's. I spend about $1000 a year keeping each in good order with minor performance mods. (i.e. muffler goes, so I get a slightly larger stainless system, or shocks go so I buy bilsteins instead of sachs) Some years more, some years less. This is to keep them a little better than normal. Nothing super extreme. If you want extreme, the sky is the limit. This is not a Saab phenomena, but goes for any car.
My 88 900T is worth about $1000, but I've replaced almost everything except the engine and transmission, so if I swapped to another car, I'd be replacing stuff all over again as things wear out on that one too. I still spend about $1000 a year on it. Last year, I bought a sparco seat for it. After shipping and having mounting hardware made, I was out about $1300. But it makes the car so much more comfortable and fun. This year, I put driving lights on, which make it nicer at night on dark lonely roads.
All this stuff gives your car real usuable character and it's still cheaper than car payments over the long term.
Some cars, like an antique Jag, you can spend a few thousand a year keeping the car working and nice. Makes Saab repairs seem cheap.
If you like your SPG, keep doing stuff to it. Stuff has to be done for any used car whether you own it or not.
