Dyno testing 6/1/04 – Saabotage 1986 SPG

Location: Sacramento Volvo Services
Equipment: Superflow SF 840 dual eddy current dyno; 2200 lbs inertial weight
Temperature: ambient temps varied from 75F to 85F, all results are presented in STP
Help: thanks to Justin VanAbrahams – special pit crew and vacuum line expert

Engine setup: This is a 2.0L 16V B202 block with ported 2.0L head and 2.1L n/a cams. A K&N filter on the intake, and 3” exhaust after the turbo. The turbo is a T3-Super60 from Turbonetics and FMIC from Porsche 944T. Internals are stock but balanced. Pistons are Saab/Mahle early APC for 8.25:1 compression. Modifications as becessart for use of Trionic T5. Engine oil was fresh Mobil 1 0w-40 and the gearbox had fresh Redline Shockproof Lightweight. Gas was California 91 with a bottle of Outlaw octane booster (don’t know if it works, it just sounds cool).

This was basically a power test between 2 computers – a stock Saab 9000 Aero box, and a Stage IV box from a well known tuner.

Results:

Aero hp/torque at rpms: 248 at 5639 / 243 at 3935
Tuner hp/torque at rpms: 238 at 5689 / 228 at 5216

There are dyno sheets on the Saabpics website (link below).

Analysis: the tuner box was not making boost as intended, and we don’t know why. When I ran the box in my 1998 SET it boosted mid-red on the first drive – seemed OK. Something about the SPG was not cooperating I guess. The Aero box on the other hand was hitting 17-18 psi in the SPG with no problems, and holding 90% torque from 3700 to 5500 rpms!

On the road, the Tuner box has superior idle control and very snappy throttle response, which makes it my choice for daily driving. I’ll be working out the WOT boost issue as soon as I can!
