Cam Timing Change for a Milled Head???

OK..I've replace a 16v 2.0T cracked head with a rebuilt and (unfortunately?) milled head. And surprise- the timing marks do not line up anymore. They will only line up at "11:30" or "12:30" Performance bb searches show suggestions that, given the choice, to keep the cam sprocket marks slightly clockwise of the top reference marks, toward the intake side. Would this means engine timing is slightly retarded? Visually, the angles appear to be 5 or 6 degrees off their marks. Now low-end performance has dropped.
Given the current setup, how can ignition timing be changed to help compensate???
Also, has anyone successfully adjusted the cam timing to accommodate for milling?
