Hello andy,
sorry to hear about your cracked pistons... that sucks! I don't know too much about what you were trying to do, or even what model CAR you have for that matter, but it sucks and i'm sorry to hear that...
...i can never hear the darn thing knocking or pinging either. It's just all of a sudden i've got base boost, and it sucks!
And LED if a perfect way to know if it's knock... and i don't think it'd be that hard either!
I have all sorts of wiring diagrams for all years and models of saab... so i decided to look up my 1990 9000 turbo to see how i would wire my own.
The knock sensor looks pretty complicated... like you said... however i think it'd be a more sure fire way at knowing if it's knocking!
If you hooked up the LED to the BPC solenoid, the light might go off, but the condition for the BPC solenoid "closing" might not be caused by engine knock, there are multiple things that could trigger it... ya know?
so... in my 1990 with ecu and di/apc computers... i would either tap into pin 11, or pin 30... even with my diagrams i can't tell which one is ground tho...
let me try and figure somehting out... i'll get back to you
