When in search of traction, I think tires are #1. I use as wide as possible and as sticky
as possible. My SPG will handle 215/45-17 street tires and I've had good experience with
Pirelli Pzero, Michelin Pilot Mxx3 and Pilot Sport, Bridgestone S0-2 and S-03, and even the
Sumitomo HTRZ-II's (cheapest at $95 each from Tirerack).
Basically when shopping for tires, any type of all-season is a waste of time. Tires MUST BE of
the “Max Perf” or “Ultra-High Perf” type only. If you cheap out, you can say all kind of things
like “I can spin tires in 3rd gear” or whatever but it’s really the bad tires, not the power that does it.
Second most important is suspension setup, which must have more compliance in the front
than in the rear. This will help with acceleration traction as well as reducing understeer. If you
are really lucky and have lots of cash, an LSD will help distribute traction between both tires
so you don’t smoke 1 tire all the time – if anyone watched the Autocross at the ’04 SOC this past
Friday, the blue Viggen was out-of-this-world cool but lost a lot of speed doing one-wheel burnouts!
My 1st and 2nd gears are basically useless, but that is more because the gearing in a c900 5-speed
is quite low…for example, I run out of revs before 60mph in second gear.
