because of the primary drive & the I believe 3 direction changes the power takes by the time it gets to the wheels & the hypoid gears used in the ring & pinion
a transverse FWD has the more efficient setup whereas a RWD is a lil less eficient
Im aware of the high losses in the subies but I think the 35-40% is a bit on the high side
none the less its a pretty damm impressive car & to keep up with it with my ol clunker makes me verry happy :-)
