Ok that is not entirely true. WAY back in low tech days - I'm talking about carburettors and old school V8's, this argument may have been justified. These days, car manufacturers spend a lot of money into designing every aspect of their cars - this goes for airfilters also. There has been a lot of research (meaning manometers and Dwyer Magnehelic Differential Pressure Gauges) into eliminative negative boost within the intake and it has been found that the air filter element (in modernish cars at least) is NOT the restriction and actually flows quite well. Standard intakes are designed to lower intake noises and make them EPA (and other gov. regulations) friendly. This is where the manufacturer has choked it somewhat - NOT the airfilter.
Having wrote that rant - I've also got a K & N on my car - but mainly for ease of maintenance.
