when you heat the metal to weld it perticularly where the heat is focused in a small area tig mig that you are melting metal than rite next to that the metal is relativeley cold so the molten metal contracts more than the colder metal next to it this builds in stress rite next to the weld thats why when welding if you heat the area you are welding on & next to it it will stress relieve the weld
on cast iron manifolds old timers will throw the manifold in a fire for an hour or so because on cast iron welding is super weak because of the above mentioned physics?
