I have a 1993 Aero, and for the class that it is in I have always been impressed with its performance. That is to say, I have kept up with cars like the 2002 Nissan Maxima (which has 255 hp and 246 ft/lbs of torque) and pulled away from cars like the 2000 Acura 3.2 TL (which has 225 hp and 216 ft/lbs of torque).

Based on the above, I always thought that torque was a good indication of how much faster one car would be against the next. So, I thought the Aero would be somewhat of a faster car then the new Mazda RX-8 at highway speeds. However, if you look at the new RX-8 specs, the car has 238 hp and only 159 ft/lbs of torque! Yet, this car basically has the same performance specs as an Aero. It does 0-100 mph in 15.9 seconds (just like the Aero); does the 1/4 mile in 14.5 seconds (while the Aero does it in 14.8 seconds); and it's top speed is about 149 mph (just like the Aero's top speed).

Can someone enlighten me as to why a car with only 159 ft/lbs (i.e. RX-8) of torque can keep up with a 258 ft/lbs (i.e. Aero) torque car? Would love to know! TIA.
